PRE-DEPARTURE BRIEFING

The day before the trip you will have a briefing at your accommodation in Cusco where you will get detailed information and instructions for the next 2 days.  You will also receive your entrance tickets and train tickets.

DAY 1: CUSCO - PISAQ - URUMBA - OLLANTAYTAMBO - AGUAS CALIENTES

After being picked up from your hotel by your guide who will escort you through the Sacred Valley, you will travel down into the Sacred Valley until your first stop after about 45 minutes at Pisaq.

Usually there are markets in the main square of the town where artisans from the Sacred Valley come to show and sell their art. Overlooking the town are cultivated terraces and Inca ruins where you will find 6 citadels constructed by the Incas, and an amazing view of the valley.'

Next you will travel to the town of Urubama for lunch, sampling traditional Peruvian food, before continuing onto the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo. Located 97km from Cusco, Ollantaytambo was an agricultural, administrative, religious, military and social complex for the Incas which the Spaniards called "Fortaleza" when they encountered it.  In the evening you will have a 3 hour train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, a town nearby Machu Picchu, where you will stay the night in a local hotel. Aguas Caliented is great for walking around visiting shops, restaurants, and even some thermal pools which you can soak in.

DAY 2: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

The next morning you will be met at your hotel by a guide who will escort you to the bus which will climb the mountain to the majestic Machu Picchu site. Your entrance is included and the guide will show you around and explain the importance of the ruins for 2 hours. You will then have ample time to explore the area on your own and at a designated time you will need to make your way to the train for your return journey back to Ollantaytambo where transport will be waiting to take you the rest of the way back to Cusco.

What to take: passport, extra cash, rain jacket, warm clothes, mosquito repellent, hat and sunglasses, sunscreen, and charge your camera before you go, plus have plenty of space on your memory card. You also have the option of soaking in the hot springs of Aguas Calientes and if you wish to do this you will also need your bathing suit.
