You can visit archaeological sites including the famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, plus many other ruins left by many other cultures that settled in Peru. You can also visit the magical city of Cuzco, where you can still sense the Inca legacy and it's magical mixture with colonial Spanish architecture. Cuzco is also the Peruvian capital of fun, possessing many pubs and discos, plus the city has excellent excursions to, and beyond it's outskirts where you can visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu itself.
Peru has a very popular circuit for backpackers known as the "Gringo trail," and it includes Lima, Paracas, Huacachina, Nazca, Arequipa (Colca Canyon), Puno (Lake Titicaca), Cuzco, Machu Picchu, and back to Lima. The reason it is popular is that it involves short distances and you tick-off the "not to be missed" attractions. Nevertheless, Peru has many other incredible places to the north such as Huanchaco and Mancora.
If you decide to travel alone youŽll find lots of interesting people traveling just like you, and it is easy to find partners for your trip. Besides other travelers, you will meet new cultures, customs, languages and dialects, and you should try to share them and learn from them. Backpacking is one of the most beautiful ways to travel! You go with your loaded pack on your back, crossing incredible destinations, meeting amazing people; and one of the most truly rewarding places to find yourself backpacking is Peru.
