Inca Trail Closed

Inca Trail Closed

Scores of travellers to Peru have been disapointed about missing thier opportunity to trek the Inca Trail due to it's closing a couple of months ago. It was closed because of landslides caused by excessive rain.

On 10 February in a press conference with the Peruvian Ministry of Tourism the minister Martin Perez stated the railway to Aguas Calientes will be open as from the beginning of April and access via road between Hidro-Electrica and Santa Maria will take at least 2 months to repair because of the need to construct two tunnels to help stabilize this section of the road. This effectively means that there will be no way to get to and from Machu Picchu until the beginning of April. i.e. put in simple terms Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail will be closed during February and March 2010.

INCA TRAIL OPEN!! The Inca Trail will only be closed during the month of February each year. The last group will depart on 31 January and the next group will start on 01 March. The closure is to allow conservation projects to take place, give an opportunity for camping facilities to be improved and to allow the vegetation to grow back. February is also the height of the wet season so you shouldn't miss too much. The shorter 2 days trek and the alternative 4 days Inca Trails will remain open since those treks follow different routes. The ruins of Machu Picchu will remain open as normal as will the train services between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Well they say the 1st of April, but it will be more like the end of April. Best to try for then so as not to be disapointed!
