Access to Machu Picchu Decreasing

Access to Machu Picchu Decreasing

Being one of the must do backpacker sites in the world hasn't been too kind to Machu Picchu, well at least from a sustainability point of view according to a recent study by geographical investigators.

The report states that the 2000+ a day visitors to the site are slowly causing erosion, and the percentage of visitors are increasing by 6 percent per year. Fortunately accessing the site is restricted to either hiking the Inca Trail or catching a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo which keeps visitors down due to availability of permits for the trek and seats on the train.

But this hasn't stopped the concerns from international groups like UNESCO who have been calling for more limits to the site. In response to this the Peruvian Gov't are making plans to reduce access for preservation purposes. This means that competion will increase for the spots on tours, treks and transport heading to the ancient site making it even more important to book everything early to prevent disappointment of not seeing the highlight of Peru when you get there!
