If you think you have seen everything and nothing else surprises your mind then you must visit Uyuni Salt flats. This huge ocean of sand high in the Andes looks like a science fiction scenery. It is the biggest salt flat in the world and has many attractions for your visit. Traveling to Uyuni is a once in a life experience!
Located high in the Andes, Uyuni is close the border between Bolivia and Chile. Uyuni Salt flats were formed after the disappearance of an ancient lake called Ballivian, about 40.000 years ago. From those days there are still some colorful lakes that are just outstanding. You can even watch the beautiful flamingos that come to Uyuni every November to grow their little pigeons.
One of the most stunning marvels of Uyuni is a hotel completely made of salt! This incredible building has walls and even the whole furniture made of salt. You can also visit "Isla Pescado" (Fish Island), a big stone structure located in the middle of Uyuni salt flats that allows excellent views. And the fabulous Green and Red Lakes are just impossible to describe.
Don´t forget to take your camera, because you´ll find unique spots everywhere. For instance, there are huge cacti and lots of salt piles in the middle of a salt landscape.
For traveling to the "Salar de Uyuni" (Uyuni Salt Flats) you must take bus from Potosi to Uyuni, a small village that dedicates mostly to salt extraction. From there you can get a tour to travel and wander in the flats in a jeep and catch the magic of the area in this awesome place.
Your backpacking experience in Bolivia and Peru is not complete if you miss Uyuni!
