Salta is one of Argentina's oldest cities and has managed to preserve its colonial charm better than most other cities in Argentina. It was founded in 1582 by Spaniards moving south from the Viceroyalty of Peru. Salta city is the capital of the Salta province, and everything you can think of when you think Argentina can be found here. Good wines, big steaks, gauchos, and great people.
Take your time breathing in the culture found around the San Martin Plaza. Ride the cable-car to the summit of Cerro San Bernado and make your way down again on foot, then party the night away on Balcarce street where you will find a drinking establishment to suite everyone, including somewhere to see a Pena (Argentine folk dancing). Salta is a great place to spend a couple of days while backpacking Argentina.
