Included Activity - Salt Flat Tours, Uyuni

Imagen

The Salar de Uyuni or "salt flats" are one of the main highlights of any journey to Bolivia and you shouldn't miss your chance to see one of the world's most unique destination. The landscapes within this region are harsh and conditions are basic, therefore you should not count on a lot of comfort on your visit, but the adventure and what you will be seeing will more than compensate this.

Nobody can assertain the amount of salt that makes-ups the salt flats (salar de Uyuni) but it is approximated at few million tons & is often advertised as being the worlds largest supply of lithium. In addition to the amazing salt flats this multiday journey will also visit red and green-colored lakes where you will spot flocks of flamingos. Also on the itinerary are hot geyser grounds, hot springs and you will pass through barren volcanic desertscapes that include unreal natural stone formations.

Below is a typical itinerary - this can and does change (rainy season can mean some parts of the salar are unreachable). Please confirm with your driver before departing if there is something you especially want to see to ensure you arrange to visit it.

DAY 1 - UYUNI - COLCHANI - INCAHUASI / ISLA PESCADO - AGUA QUISA

You will depart Uyuni at about 10.30 am and pay a visit to the train cemetery, where you will have the chance to look at the old corroding trains from a lot of years ago. Soon after this you will pay a visit to Colchani and watch the way the salt is refined, before approaching the actual Salt Flats and checking out the "Ojos de Sal" , where water bubbles up throughout the salt flatlands. You will discover where the salt have been laced in piles ready to be shifted, the authentic salt hotel (no longer used for visitors) and also check out Inca Huasi (Fish Island) to look at the gigantic cacti and enjoy wonderful views of the salt flats all round. You will have enough time to take astonishing photo of the area before proceeding toward Cave of Galaxies, along with its unique rock formations, to end up at the small town of Agua Quisa, where you will spend the night.

DAY 2 - AGUA QUISA - PASO LEON - LAGUNAS - LAGUNA COLORADA

Today the scenery changes to mountains, volcanoes and arid lands. After showing your passport at Chiguana military check point we head toward "Pasa de Leon" for fantastic views of Volcano Ollagua. The rest of the day is for visiting lagoons and viewing mountainous landscapes. You will witness flamingos feeding on the mineral rich waters of the lagoons and in the afternoon you will arrive at the rich red colored "Laguna Colorada" where you will stay the night - very cold here so sleeping bag advised.

DAY 3 - LAGUNA COLORADA - GEYSERS - LAGUNA VERDE - UYUNI

Today is an early start to visit the steam shooting geysers and bubbling mud pools at sunrise. You will be glad of the heat from the steam as it gets extremely cold here before sunrise. Afterwards the group heads towards some natural hot springs where you can relax and soak your aches away. After lunch the destination is the bright green waters of Laguna Verde which are over looked by snow capped volcanoes.

IF YOUR TOUR ENDS IN SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (CHILE):

On the last day your guide will help you get your transfer to San Pedro de Atacama instead of returning to Uyuni with the rest of your group.

Other Things you should know about our Budget Backpacker Tours

Jeep Tours into the Uyuni Salt Flats are an unforgettable experience but unfortunately the general standard of facilities and services are not very high in the area. We would like to make it clear that things are not as reliable, comfortable and professional as we would like on these budget backpacker tours so for this reason we do not promise more than what you will receive for your money.

The accommodations & food will be basic (although first night is with double/triple rooms), there will be a driver and a English speaking guide. Due to the harshness of the terrain vehicle breakdowns are common. Still interested?

Good, you should be because if you can put up with a bit of hardship you should have a great time. Take some extra snacks, plenty of warm clothes and a sleeping bag and the accommodations will be fine. The drivers are used to breakdowns and are pretty adept at fixing their vehicles, they are always willing to help each other out and you are usually not stuck for long - so a bit of patience is often all you need. We believe if you are informed truthfully about the possible negative aspects of the tours you can prepare yourself better and will have a positive backpacker experience into one of the best isolated backpacker destinations.
